Description
Absolut Vodka is a brand of vodka produced near Ahus, in southern Sweden. Absolut brand is now part of the French group Pernod Ricard when they bought it in 2008 from the Swedish state. Absolut is also one of the largest brands of spirits in the world and is sold in 126 countries. Absolut was established in 1879 by Lars Olsson Smith in the very same village.
Absolut practices a one source production philosophy where all of their production takes place in or around the village of Ahus, Sweden. Smith challenged the city of Stockholm’s liquor marketing monopoly with his vodka by selling it outside of the city border at a lower price. In 1917, the Swedish government monopolized the country’s alcohol industry and Absolut became state-owned. The vodka was sold nationwide under a new name called Absolut Rent Brannvin which translates to Absolutely Pure Spirit. The old name was picked up again when the upper range of Absolut Vodka was introduced in 1979. Absolut vodka was also introduced to the global market in the same year.
Absolut Vodka is made exclusively from natural ingredients and unlike some other vodka brands, do not contain any added sugar. Absolut uses locally-grown winter wheat and water sources from around the village. Smith the founder invented a method that removes contaminants such as glut in the spirit and has not been changed today.
Absolut Vodka Blue is a vodka product that was launched in New York in 1979. The transparent and label-less bottle was inspired by the 18th Century medicine bottle which stood out from its competitors in 1970s New York. Bottled at the standard 40% ABV.
